BYOC (bring your own carrier)
BYOC means connecting your own telephony account to a platform rather than buying numbers from that platform.
The alternative is a platform that issues you a number, which is faster to start but makes that platform your carrier. Under BYOC the account stays in your name: you keep the contract, the rates you negotiated, the numbers your customers already have, and the right to port them somewhere else.
The practical trade is setup effort against ownership. Buying a number from a platform takes a minute; connecting your own carrier takes some configuration and means you carry the telephony obligations yourself — registration, caller identity, and whatever your regulator asks of the party placing the call.
